An Interesting Little History of Rubber Clogs

Beginning in 1831, Charles Goodyear (Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company) developed and manufactured the first rubber shoes over a 13 year period. During this time he founded many factories that manufactured rubber shoes and life preservers in several northeastern states.

These ventures all failed and Charles Goodyear OFTEN went broke because the shoes only lasted a short time before the rubber got sticky and fell apart. Goodyear was undaunted by the little set backs and was always determined that he could develop a process to make good rubber shoes.

After Charles Goodyear received Patents for the vulcanization process in 1844-1846, he and his two brothers opened several rubber products factories.
